The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) has reached a major milestone completing 1.2 million man-hours without lost time injury at Al Wakrah Stadium construction site. This safety mark is based on industry practice representing working hours without any injuries that caused lost time. Coinciding with this accomplishment, the SC hosted the Al Wakrah Annual Safety Day on site.
Safety days and safety recognition initiatives are held on a regular basis across all 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™ proposed host venue construction sites, helping to contribute to the SC's safety record of zero fatalities on all projects. The event in Al Wakrah gathered workers and representatives from enabling works contractor HBK, project manager KEO, and design consultant Aecom. Safety practices were demonstrated and reinforced through a series of training sessions. Individual workers were also recognised for their contributions to a safe working site.
Othman Zarzour, SC Acting Assistant Technical Delivery Executive Director, emphasised: "Health and safety is priority number one for the SC. We make sure to reinforce this message to everyone working across our sites and to implement it on a daily basis. Safety days and safety recognition initiatives like these highlight our commitment to ensuring a safe and healthy working environment."
Abdul Bashar, who works on the Al Wakrah Stadium construction site, commented on the day's activities: "We have been taking part in different activities today, including football, health training, and use of the safety belt. I feel good on the stadium site because work and safety is good."
This event was part of a series of safety-related events organised by the SC and its partners across all stadium sites currently underway.
Youssif Al-Musleh, Project Director at the SC, said: "The key to a safe site is driven primarily by open and timely communication. In addition to having workers with proper personal protective equipment, we need to make sure that employees feel empowered to speak up if they identify an issue, and that those who are proactive are recognised for their contribution to creating a healthy and safe workplace. Together with visible senior management involvement through our executive leadership visits, this sort of engagement creates a culture of learning and sharing, enabling the whole team to benefit from the experiences of others.">
