As progress continues across six proposed 2022 FIFA World Cup™ host venues in Qatar, safety remains the top priority on all constructions sites. With six stadiums currently under construction about 3,850 construction workers are weekly on site and regular safety days continue across all SC sites.
These safety days and safety recognition initiatives are held on a regular basis across all 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™ construction sites and help to contribute to the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy's (SC) safety record of zero fatalities on all projects.
The latest one was held at Khalifa International Stadium where all work was stopped for two hours to focus on safety across the whole site. So far 69 safety award events have been held to acknowledge safety in different ways in various sites, with over 430 safety certificates issued to workers for their exemplary safety practices across our sites.
During the Safety Stand Down at Khalifa Stadium workers were given individual presentations on different subject matter including work at height, excavations or lifting activities among others. Each worker was also issued with a pocket sized card to reinforce the training received with the site emergency number on the rear of the card.
This month, Al Rayyan Stadium, which is getting close to 1 million man-hours without a lost time accident, will celebrate its second safety day on site, after the successful event held in 2014.
Nigel Valvona, SC Health and Safety Manager, said: "This year's event in Al Rayyan will focus more on health and well-being awareness, including exercise, balanced diet, lifestyle and general health and an awareness of preventing disease, rather than just focus on construction safety. The event will give workers on the project a chance to meet with some of Qatar's leading experts in health and well-being and interact with a hands-on fun learning approach."
He added: "Our 'work safe deliver amazing' strategy has predominantly focused on construction safety. Now we plan to explore the clear interaction between having an awareness of the causes of work related ill-health and how it can be prevented, together with an emphasis on how choosing a healthier lifestyle can ensure that we remain fit for work. I would also like to thank all those involved with organising the event."
Valvona also emphasised the importance of good management and training activities to stay on track when it comes to safety. He said: "Coordination is very important in this area, as there are many parties involved in each site."
