On 18 December 1878, Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammad, founder of the State of Qatar, succeeded his father, Sheikh Mohammad Bin Thani, as ruler. He went on to lead the country towards unity. Ever since, Qatar has celebrated its National Day in commemoration of that historic moment – a day of solidarity, loyalty and pride.
The event is considered an opportunity for all Qatari nationals and expatriates to recognise and celebrate what it means to live in Qatar today, as well as pay tribute to the generations who laid the country's foundation.
The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) takes great pride in contributing to and supporting Qatar's continued development and prosperity. This year, the SC hosted and participated in a number of activities that demonstrated their commitment and loyalty to Qatar and its people.
Temba: Traditional Children's Football Tournament
Over the course of ten days, the SC hosted a traditional 'temba' tournament for children from local schools at the Darb Al Saai activity area. Temba is the name of the original, traditional, back-to-basics version of football that was played in Qatar long ago. The tournament, which benefitted from the support of the Qatar National Day Committee, was an exciting cultural event for everyone – especially for the schoolchildren, who played on the sand, barefoot, in traditional national dress.
In addition to the tournament, the SC had a team on hand hosting a pitch-side activation area, where SC employees engaged with the local community and the youth of Qatar.
Dream 2030
The name and theme of the Qatar National Day Committee tent was 'Dream 2030'. The tent contained an interactive exhibit describing Qatar's history and its future, leading up to 2030. For the year 2022, there was a model of the Al Wakrah Stadium, currently under construction, as well as touchscreens with proposed designs and information about other stadiums proposed for use during the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™.
