Workers building stadiums for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™ will soon begin a bespoke training programme designed to introduce workers to life in Qatar, improve technical capabilities, enhance job performance and increase productivity and safety.
The programme has been fostered by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) – the organisation responsible for building the infrastructure for the 2022 FWC™ – in partnership with renowned training and safety specialists, QISC (Qatar International Safety Centre).
The SC recently signed a one-year partnership with QISC to pilot this training programme for workers currently engaged on 2022-related projects.
As part of the first phase roll-out, workers will be offered a smooth transition into working and living in Qatar by learning basic knowledge such as how to use an ATM, learning key English and Arabic phrases and how to get around Qatar. They will also receive refresher tutorials on health & safety standards, the SC's Workers' Welfare Standards, the SC's available grievance mechanisms, and other SC initiatives and programmes they can benefit from.
The courses aim to improve productivity, enhance the skillsets required by workers on the job, and better equip workers for future careers.
Reflecting on the one-year agreement, Mahmoud Qutub, Head of the SC's WWD, said: "This programme represents a huge step in our efforts to ensure the health and well-being of the workers on our projects.
"We want to be able to offer more than just employment for these workers. We want to directly contribute to social and human development by building confidence in the workers, which will allow them to integrate more easily into the community."
He continued: "We are also committed to ensuring workers have a deep understanding of what health and safety means to them, and to develop more well-rounded and happy employees. Our hope is to give all of our workers the experience, qualifications and skills that better equip them for future careers."
Established in 2001, QISC was initially set up to deliver health and safety training for the oil and gas industry in Qatar, as well as fire safety training for Qatar's emergency services. Due to the high demand for their professional services, QISC expanded into a fully-equipped training centre catering to all industries across Qatar.
With more than 15 years' experience, QISC will deliver the training courses in English, Hindi, Urdu, Tagalog and Malayalam, catering for the diverse range of nationalities on SC projects. Various options of daytime, evening, weekday and weekend courses will be available to accommodate the working hours of SC workers. The courses will be delivered in QISC's state-of-the-art training centre and on SC construction and accommodation sites.
"We want to be able to offer more than just employment for these workers. We want to directly contribute to social and human development by building confidence in the workers, which will allow them to integrate more easily into the community"
Sonya Rice, Business Manager of QISC, added: "We are delighted to have been selected by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy to be their training partner, supporting their legacy and commitment to bring health, safety and well-being to the thousands of workers who have the fortune to work on these landmark projects.
"We are working closely together to develop and deliver the most appropriate selection of induction, soft skills, and technical training which will enrich the employees with a wealth of qualifications to carry with them to future projects around the world, as well as keep them safe throughout their daily work schedules."
