H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi has said that environmental sustainability is one of the core values of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) as it prepares to deliver the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ and – in association with fellow stakeholders – ensure Qatar's continued development on a global scale.

In his address at Monday's award ceremony to mark the completion of the second phase of the National Programme for Conservation and Energy Efficiency Tarsheed 22, the SC's Secretary General emphasised how the Qatar National Vision 2030 served as the bedrock for SC's mission to accelerate the country's growth through the hosting of the first ever FIFA World Cup™ of the Middle East region.

Al Thawadi said: "Based on the Qatar National Vision 2030, the SC places environmental sustainability as one of its core values. We work with our partners to deliver a sustainable 2022 FIFA World Cup and drive positive change towards a sustainable economy to ensure Qatar's development."

He added: "We are proud of our work with KAHRAMAA, represented by Tarsheed, for the second consecutive year to accomplish the second phase of T22. We use the power of football to educate students of 22 new schools and educate them on energy efficiency and water consumption."

Minister of Energy & Industry H.E. Dr Mohammed Bin Saleh Al-Sada and KAHRAMAA President H.E. Eng Essa Bin Hilal Al-Kuwari were also present on the occasion.

Designed to educate Qatari youth about energy conservation through a love of football, and organised by the SC in association with Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAAMA), Tarsheed 22 has achieved annual carbon emissions reductions surpassing 688 tonnes annually and brought Qatar one step closer to achieving a carbon neutral FIFA World Cup™.

Delivered in 22 primary schools of Qatar, Tarsheed 22 (T22) targets sustainability and energy conservation training among students, their parents and families and school employees through sports activities designed and delivered by the Green Generation initiative of SC's flagship CSR programme Generation Amazing. It also monitors energy consumption patterns in the participating schools.

The second phase of T22 was launched at the start of the 2016-17 academic year, and thanks to energy-saving technologies and like energy-efficient light bulbs, dimmer switches and aerated faucets, the 22 target schools reduced their annual consumption of electricity by 1.1 million units of energy and water by 4,350 cubic metres, saving QAR 400,000 annually. The project decreased carbon emissions by nearly 700 tonnes per year.

With the support of the Supreme Education Council, Tarsheed will expand to include all Qatari primary, intermediate and secondary schools by 2022.

T22 also recognised the continued commitment to the winners of the 2015 competition – by offering solar-powered lighting systems to set an example for conservation in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.

"It's fantastic to see these schools getting recognition for their pioneering work." said Conservation and Energy Efficiency Manager at KAHRAAMA Abdul Aziz Ahmed Al Hammadi.

"We have put energy and water conservation on the national agenda, and through our programs we ensure that younger generation understand it well. The winning schools are inspiring a new generation of people to take action on water and electricity conservation."
