H.E. the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani awarded the 'best government corporation applying Tarsheed practices' to SC Secretary General H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi during the ceremony.

The SC has played a proactive role in promoting sustainability, the fourth pillar of the Qatar National Vision 2030, through various means. One of the ways in it has fulfilled its sustainability commitment is by teaming up with KAHRAMAA to launch Tarsheed 22, which inspired children aged between seven and 12 in 22 primary schools across Qatar to save energy through football.

Part of the Green Generation initiative of the SC's flagship Corporate Social Responsibility programme Generation Amazing, Tarsheed 22 was the ideal energy conservation platform for the participating schools, who adopted new energy-saving technologies and achieved reduction of carbon emissions by almost 700 tonnes.

Speaking on the occasion, Qatar's Minister for Energy and Industry, H.E. Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada, said conservation strategies and best practices successfully implemented over the last five years will be accelerated further in the next five years leading to 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™.

"Energy conservation and achieving environmental sustainability will be a priority for all government sectors for the next five years," said H.E. Al Sada, who also reflected on Tarsheed's impressive performance.

"In December 2016, it was found that Carbon emissions had decreased by 8.2 million tonnes."

KAHRAMAA President HE Engineer Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari said that Tarsheed 22 will expand to cover more than 250 primary schools by 2022.

The second phase of Tarsheed 22, launched at the start of the 2016-17 academic year, ended in March 2017 when statistics showcased that the schools had reduced their annual consumption of electricity by 1.1 million units, water by 4,350 cubic metres and achieved carbon emission decrease in the region of 700 tonnes.

In his address at the award ceremony to mark the completion of the second phase of Tarsheed 22, H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi had emphasised that the Qatar National Vision 2030 served as the foundation for the organisation's mission to accelerate the country's growth through the hosting of the first ever FIFA World Cup™ in the Middle East.

He said: "Based on the Qatar National Vision 2030, the SC places environmental sustainability as one of its core values. We work with our partners to deliver a sustainable 2022 FIFA World Cup and drive positive change towards a sustainable economy to ensure Qatar's development."
